8 â Cross Country
Erik, being Erik, decided he could fly over anything he wanted to without waiting for permission.
âSo are you on for reasonably early in the morning?â we heard him drawl. âMaybe about 8.30? I have things to do later.â
âAnd I suppose youâll both have to talk to Carver or Wick,â Paul said.
Heather puffed out an impatient breath. âThey can wait. I really canât tell them anything more than Erik already did.â
âYou got transport or you want me to collect you?â he asked.
She looked across at Paul. âIs your car fixed yet?â
âWith any luck Iâm collecting it from Ten Ton by midday â he was waiting for a replacement radiator.â
âI can take you,â I said. I remembered Erik and John and Heather had all shared the first flight. Why not Erik and Heather and me this time around? âSo we come to Kirkpatrickâs barn around 8.30?â
âOkey-dokey,â Erik said, although no actual invitation to fly was issued. Surely he wouldnât be so cruel as to leave me standing by the barn while he flew off with Heather?
âYou know where youâre going?â Graham asked. That was aimed at Erik, not me.
âYup â pulled it up on the sat-map.â
âDevon Downs,â Graham said, wanting to make sure.
âYup â can see the lake. Might have to land outside the fenced area if we do this for real. Thereâs a lot of native forest.â
âBush,â Graham said.
âBigger than bushes! But yes, I know thatâs what you Kiwis call it.â
âNo idea why,â I said. âBut itâs the areas of original native vegetation. For instance, you wouldnât call that pine plantation âbushâ.â
âAnd over in Aussie,â Graham added, âThey call everything outside the cities âbushâ, and itâs mostly open space with damn-all bushes.â
âStrange world, Down Under,â Erik agreed with a smile in his voice. âAnyway, weâll have a look in the morning, and if itâs not suitable then no point even asking the owner.â
âIâll be phoning him anyway,â Graham said. âSee how heâs coping.â
âLeave it until maybe ten,â Erik said. âIâll get back to you.â Then he changed to a much softer tone. âYou want to take me off speaker now, honey?â
Heather reached out for the phone. âDone,â she murmured. âSo Iâll see you in the morning.â
I watched as she closed her eyes and listened to whatever private things he wanted to say. Then she gave a quiet laugh, said âyou too,â and disconnected.

Iâd promised myself Thursday was the day Iâd spend time on Elaine OâBlytheâs next animal opus â sorting out the spelling and the alarming liberties she sometimes took with her grammar. Sheâs a charming storyteller though, and this time it was another tale about Kerry the kereru. But was Kerry the big pigeon going to take precedence over a possible helicopter flight? Not on your nelly!
I grabbed a slice of toast and marmalade, gave my desk a guilty glance, called goodbye to Graham through the bathroom door, and was on the road in my Ford Focus by eight oâclock. Five minutes later I was knocking on Paulâs glossy red front door.
